Detroit Lions to add Devon Kennard, re-sign Tavon Wilson
The Detroit Lions needed linebackers. They appear to have landed their first one in former New York Giants’ linebacker Devon Kennard.
With several of veterans possibly leaving in free agency, and the hiring of former New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as head coach, the Detroit Lions figured to be in the market for linebackers this offseason. And now, the first deal for one has reportedly been struck.
According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Lions have struck a deal with former New York Giants linebacker Devon Kennard to sign a three-year, $18.75 million contract when the new NFL league year starts on Wednesday.

A former fifth round selection out of USC by the New York Giants in 2014, Kennard showed potential during his time in the Big Apple. Last season, the 26-year old recorded a career low 41 tackles despite starting a a career high 11 games. But Kennard did also record 4.0 sacks.
The Lions have three linebackers scheduled to hit free agency on Wednesday in Tahir Whitehead, Nick Bellore and Paul Worrilow. The addition of Kennard gives Detroit some experienced insurance in case they lose any of their veterans to the open market.
Additionally, the Lions’ defensive scheme figures to include a 3-4 formation at times, requiring Detroit to keep more linebackers in reserve. Kennard could be just the first of many new faces in the linebacker corps this offseason.
Along with the expected signing of Kennard, the Lions have re-signed Tavon Wilson. The former New England Patriot originally signed with Detroit as a free agent in 2016. During his short tenure in the Motor City, the soon-to-be 28-year old safety has recorded a total of 144 tackles, 3.0 sacks and three interceptions while starting 23 games for the Lions.

Being a former Patriot, the re-signing of Tavon Wilson makes a lot of sense for Detroit considering he’s experienced in Patricia’s defense scheme having spent his first four seasons in the NFL as a backup in New England.
