Detroit Lions re-sign Kerry Hyder, Don Muhlbach; Richard Sherman visit
The Detroit Lions got some free agency business done on Saturday, including scheduling a visit with one of the hottest veterans on the market.
The NFL has been a whirlwind of trades and free agency signings recently. But the Detroit Lions have stayed relatively quiet in the eye of the storm. That was, until Saturday.
The Lions have now announced the re-signing of exclusive free rights free agent defensive end Kerry Hyder and very longtime longsnapper Don Muhlbach.
Hyder led the Lions with 8.0 sacks in 2016. Last year, he suffered an Achilles injury in Detroit’s opening preseason game. His presence along the defensive line was important to pair with defensive end Ezekiel Ansah in 2018, giving the Lions a solid pass rushing duo for new defensive-minded head coach Matt Patricia to build upon.
If there has been one consistent in Detroit for the past 15 years, it’s been Muhlbach. His presence on special teams is invaluable to making that unit one of the best in the NFL. And he’s doing an excellent job if you never hear his name on a broadcast.
Finally, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions have scheduled a visit with former Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman next week. Although, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Sherman says no specific date has been scheduled at this time. And he should know, as Sherman acts as his own agent.
After seven seasons in Seattle, the 29-year old Sherman was released last week after having surgery to clean up his left Achilles. He played just nine games last season due to injury, recording 35 total tackles, seven pass defends and two interceptions. During his run with the Seahawks, Sherman was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, as well as one of the most outspoken.

Richard Sherman joining the Detroit Lions’ secondary absolutely makes sense as pairing him with All-Pro cornerback Darius Slay and veteran safety Glover Quin would instantly make the Motor City a No-Fly zone.
