We all know that the Detroit Lions are likely to kick the tires on Malcolm Butler. Will they do the same for Richard Sherman as he comes back from injury?

Though veteran cornerback Richard Sherman will be 30-years old later this month and is fighting to overcome a ruptured Achilles, he is still worth a look for Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia and his staff.

Up until his injury, Sherman hadn’t missed a game in his career and he established himself league wide as an elite shutdown corner with his stellar coverage and ball-hawking ability.

The former leader of the Seattle Seahawks’ feared Legion of Boom would bring great value and game changing experience to Detroit’s secondary.

The biggest knock against Sherman was that he seldom shadowed his opponent’s number one receiver. He stayed on his side and did everything that Seattle asked him to do within their scheme.

Were he to land in Motown, the trend of him not following the number one receiver is likely to continue.

Darius Slay proved his worth to Detroit’s defense with a Pro Bowl nod last season. He is the top corner for the Lions’ secondary and there is no disputing that point.

If Richard Sherman can return to full health though, signing him could be a boon for Detroit.

He would become an instant starter opposite Slay and Teez Tabor would be afforded an exceptional opportunity to learn from two of the best players in the NFL at his position.

Richard would also be a huge assist in helping to keep Detroit near the top of the league in forced turnovers.

By signing with the Lions, Sherman doesn’t have to feel pressured to rush back. He could heal fully and be a part of building a winning culture in Detroit.

Also, signing Richard isn’t likely to break the bank for Detroit. Sherman’s asking price could be significantly lower compared to what it would have been if he was healthy.

Next: What flavor of running back do the Lions' prefer?

Richard Sherman has always played with a chip on his shoulder and now he has the added motivation of showing what he has left in the tank.

As a fan, seeing him ply his trade in Honolulu blue and silver could be awesome. Maybe he could even work out a deal with Theo Riddick to wear the number 25!
