As he personally assessed a rookie season that started rough in terms of penalties but got better, here's what Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold told reporters as he headed into the 2025 offseason.
"I know I'll be the best corner in the league pretty soon."
That final comment raised the stakes for Arnold heading into his second season, with just enough good from his rookie season to bring hope for a significant Year 2 leap.
A shoulder injury in Week 5 last season cost Arnold the next two games. Then he played two games, and missed another two due to a concussion before returning in Week 13. Finally, an aggravation of his previous shoulder injury led to season-ending surgery and total of nine games missed for the season.
One noticeable positive came out of Arnold's second season. He grabbed the first interception of his career, so a donut in that column won't follow him into his third campaign. And despite playing eight fewer games than he did as a rookie, he had just two fewer pass breakups.
Terrion Arnold is heading into a critical third season
Colton Pouncy of The Athletic recently named winners and losers from the Lions' offseason, with Arnold as an "above the fold" loser.
"Terrion Arnold showed improvement in his second season. When targeted in man coverage, Arnold allowed just 9.5 yards per reception (17th fewest among qualified CBs), a passer rating of 77.1 (36th). Not mind-blowing statistics, but enough to warrant patience as he navigates life as a young NFL cornerback. However, after an injury-plagued 2025 season and offseason in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, is patience running thin?"
“I need him to be quiet and just play,” Lions DC Kelvin Sheppard said of Arnold at the NFL Combine. “He wants to be great, but I told him (there’s) a difference between talking about being great and actually being great, and he’s starting to understand that.”
"That sent a message that this would be an important offseason for Arnold — a confident player whose game is still catching up to his bravado. Those strides Arnold made were accompanied by a wave of nagging injuries and a subsequent shoulder surgery. In total, he played in just eight games last season."
Shortly after Sheppard's comments at the Combine, Arnold's name surfaced in some level of alleged association with an armed robbery and kidnapping in Florida.

He has not been charged with anything at this point, and by all accounts he was not directly involved in any alleged crime. But it's still not a good look to have your name attached to a story like that, and Pouncy hit the bottom line of everything for the former first-round pick.
"If Arnold’s off-field situation doesn’t escalate and he can focus on football, this could be the year he puts it all together. But as Sheppard said, there’s a difference between talking about being great and actually being great."
Last year felt important for Arnold to really start to assert himself. This season is even bigger by comparison, given how last season went and in light of that rough off the field offseason headline.
It has fallen below the radar for sure, but the Lions have a decision to make on Arnold's fifth-year option by on or around May, 1, 2027. If he can stay healthy this season and he plays well, that decision will become a relative no-brainer. If he has a repeat of his first two seasons, by production and/or health, the dreaded "B" word might start to get mentioned in something above hushed tones.
