Detroit Lions starting left guard Christian Mahogany barely got through the teams' Week 1 contest against the New Orleans Saints before collapsing in pain on the field. He was ruled out shortly after that fall with a then-designated knee injury, but head coach Dan Campbell told reporters postgame that the team fears he's experiencing more of a hip injury.
Mahogany dealt with injuries last season, which landed him in a left guard competition headed into 2026. The team had planned to rotate between him and Ben Bartch in this game to continue that competition, but it seems like Bartch might just win that job on a technicality.
Is that a bad thing for this Lions offense? Not necessarily.
What Mahogany's injury means for Lions' offensive line
Mahogany's injury came quite early in the game, so we got a good look at Bartch at left guard for the first time since his limited snaps in preseason. The results were mixed: Bartch had a terrible penalty in crunch time that brought the Lions from a few yards out of the red zone, to too far to even get a touchdown.
But, overall, the Lions' O-line was good with blocking for Jahmyr Gibbs, which was where Detroit got most of their offense on the day. His two touchdowns and 156 rushing yards came as a result of their, and Bartch's, work. So, that's good news for the Lions as they might be dealing with Mahogany out or limited for Week 2 against the Bills.

This could also mean that the Lions look to their practice squad for some help behind Bartch if, in a worst case scenario, Mahogany lands on the IR. Devin Cochran is a call-up option, but they don't have a lot of promising depth on the taxi squad, either.
It stinks that they can't utilize Juice Scruggs at guard right now with Cade Mays' injury throwing a wrench in those plans, as he might be Detroit's best option behind Bartch at guard right now.
As for a timeline for a return from a hip injury, we won't have a clear picture until there's an official diagnosis. We're watching in real-time how tricky these injuries can be to determine the severity of with Sam Darnold's Week 1 hip injury. The Seattle Seahawks are still getting multiple opinions on him, and it's expected he'll be out at least a few weeks prior to them figuring out what's up with him.
Here's the good news for Detroit: their O-line did not look bad today. That's a great sign with Mays out, and with Mahogany potentially down, too. Bartch isn't a terrible option for the Lions here, but his trecherous injury history remains front of mind right now before a short turnaround ahead of Week 2.
