Though the Detroit Lions have had a quiet start to free agency, they have added a few intriguing players at positions of need across the roster.
Adding depth in the secondary was a must after the problems down the stretch in 2025. Fortunately, the Lions found another intriguing name to throw into the mix in the form of cornerback Christian Izien.
Izien, formally of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed a one-year deal with Detroit, and is looking to prove that he belongs after being lost in the shuffle a bit in his first NFL stop. Even though he performed very well, the Buccaneers let Izien walk, and he comes to the Lions very motivated.
In fact, Izien told the media he wants to prove that he can be a starter in the NFL, and he's hungry to reach that level given how things ended for him in 2025.
"Last year a lot of things didn't go the way I thought or the way I wanted it to. I kind of put that in the past, use it as fuel (and) motivation for this year coming up. I do see myself as a starter in this league. I said that last year and I'll say it again."
On the field, Izien wants to make his presence felt with his teammates. Once he learns the defense, he wants to be seen as a player that can be counted on to help organize things in the secondary when action gets crazy on the field.
"I'm a leader. I'm a communicator. That's something I pride myself on. Football's hard. It's an 11 man sport and you're not always going to be in the best call to go against the offense you're going against. So just having guys being able to communicate with you and and have somebody out there that you trust, that's something I want to be for this team."
When a player comes in on a short contract, the team hopes they are firey and motivated enough to stand out and earn a future role. Hearing Izien speak, it's clear he's not going to have any trouble in this department for Detroit. It might be unwise to bet against him making an impact very quickly as a result.
Izien's solid production has been eye-opening early in his NFL career
Even though Izien is a player who hasn't commanded a ton of attention in the league, he's been very good early in his career. Statistically speaking, there aren't many undrafted free agents who have come into the league and made the kind of abrupt impact that he has.
In just three short seasons, Izien has collected 165 total tackles and three interceptions, showing himself to be a play maker. As Al Karsten revealed, that puts him in very rarified air in terms of players who were not selected to the league in the draft.
New Lions DB Christian Izien is one of only three undrafted players in NFL history to accomplish all of the following in their first two seasons:

• 3+ interceptions
• 5+ pass deflections
• 7+ TFLs
• 2+ forced fumbles

The Lions like Izien because he has versatility in a defensive backfield. That's a key tenant many of their current players have. It's also a trait Izien believes will serve him well as he transitions to his new team.
"With a majority of the teams that I spoke with or basically all of them (in free agency), versatility was always brought up. I know how much that's valued in this league. Only 53 guys (make up a roster). So, having the ability to play multiple positions is always an addition teams look for."
A hungry, productive player capable of playing multiple roles? It sounds like a win for a Lions team that needed a boost in the secondary. Don't be surprised if they get it from this underrated talent.
