Turf, grass, and the general debate about what the best playing surface is for NFL players continues to rage on. The debate, honestly, feels quite heavily won out by the "pro-grass" side thanks to the existence of MetLife Stadium, its turf, and its infamous history for causing major leg injuries. But, I di-grass.
Headed into this season, the Detroit Lions get a Week 1 kickoff at home, which is great - they get the support of their home crowd in their first game following a tough 9-8 finish in 2025, and a good look at their much younger roster ahead of a daunting Week 2 trip to face the Buffalo Bills in primetime.
The Bills, who just opened their brand new Highmark Stadium, are dealing with some controversies around that new building - first, fans noticed that a lot of seats around the arena, which also saw a price increase to the tune of $610 dollars per ticket, were obstructed. Now, experts are taking note of the poor field conditions at Highmark, which should be of major concern for Detroit.
Bills' sod issues should ring some alarms for Lions ahead of Week 2 matchup
In a new story in The Athletic, senior writer Tim Graham shared that the Bills are tearing up their brand-new field and re-sodding it ahead of their home opener against the Lions. According to one interview he did with a sod expert:
“That’s the worst sod I’ve seen in the NFL in my career. I can’t even imagine how that could have happened.”
It's concerning to hear that their field conditions are basically up in the air for that contest, and you worry about how effectively they'll be able to install another grass field before that contest. The Bills don't sound overly concerned, however:
“These consultants recommended utilizing this three-week window before the home opener to install the sod. The NFL inspects every field and determines whether it meets league standards. We are confident that they are the appropriate group to ensure the field performs at the necessary level.”

Agronomists interviewed by Graham seem to have a lot more of a negative outlook on the Bills' ability to re-sod and secure a brand-new field by Week 2. This poses an injury risk to both teams, and Lions fans should be even more wary of these conditions with how precarious their depth is in their secondary.
With these potentially bad field conditions, in addition to the Lions having to face off with Buffalo on a short turnaround following their Week 1 contest against the Saints, health should be at the forefront of the teams' mind headed into this game.
