Top 5 candidates to break Calvin Johnson's receiving yardage record in 2024

Calvin Johnson has admitted it's a matter of time before his single-season receiving yardage record gets surpassed, and one (or more?) of these five guys could get it done this year.

4. Ja'Marr Chase, Cincinnati Bengals

If Joe Burrow can stay healthy, which admittedly is a huge 'if' at times, Chase could make a run at the single-season receiving yardage record at some point (maybe multiple runs when it's all said and done in his career). With the loss of Tyler Boyd in free agency and lingering questions about Tee Higgins despite his finally signing his franchise tender, his target share is in line to climb this year.

Chase has had the big games a receiver would need to threaten or pass Johnson's record, but he also has some real duds along the way each season. If he can even out that consistency this year, and get to 160-170 targets or more, don't rule out him making some noise as at least being "on pace" to break Johnson's record during the season.

3. CeeDee Lamb, Dallas Cowboys

Lamb led the NFL in targets (181) and catches (135) last year, while finishing second in yards (1,749). The Cowboys did not add notably to their offensive skill positions this offseason, so his role as the unchecked top option for Dak Prescott is unabated.

The question with Lamb is regarding his contract. He sat out OTAs in search of a new deal, as he possibly eyes resetting the top of the wide receiver market. But it would be surprising if he doesn't show up for training camp, if only to get himself fully ready to have another big season.

Lamb has the role, the quarterback and the motivation (even if he gets a new contract before Week 1) to have a huge season in 2024. A push to break Johnson's receiving yardage record is hardly out of the question.
