The Detroit Lions were back on the practice field on Thursday as they prepare for a second straight playoff rematch to start the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There were some notable names/surprises on Wednesday's practice report, so the participation report for the second practice of the week was sure to be notable.
Here's Thursday's practice report for the Lions.
Ifeatu Melifonwu has apparently regressed with his ankle/Achilles? injury compared to last week, with no practice each of the last two days. So head coach Dan Campbell's initial vague to the point of concerning outlook on the injury the fourth-year safety is dealing with appears to have been foreshadowing.
Safety Kerby Joseph moved from not practicing on Wednesday due to a hamstring issue to being a limited participant on Thursday. Defensive tackle DJ Reader (quad), Cornerback Carlton Davis (chest) and safety Loren Strickland (thumb) were all full participants for the second straight day. Reader is set to make his Lions' debut on Sunday, Davis' injury from late in last week's game was never considered serious and Strickland is practicing fully after being out last week.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams has been limited both days this week with an ankle injury. A very short clip from Thursday's practice (h/t to John Maakaron of SI.com) showed him moving around without apparent issue.
Rookie wide receiver Isaiah Williams was a new addition to Thursday's injury report with an abdomen injury.
Lions have a potentially massive injury concern for Week 2
Defensive end Marcus Davenport has missed both practices this week due to a groin injury that caused him to miss the Lions' final defensive series against the Rams. While durability is a chief concern with him, and why he was available for the Lions to sign to a cheap one-year deal this offseason, he is easier to replace than the other starter who has yet to practice this week.
Right tackle Penei Sewell is dealing with an ankle injury. On Wednesday he told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press "I'm good" and only sat out Wednesday's practice for precautionary reasons after having his right ankle rolled up in the first quarter against the Rams. Sewell stayed in the game and did not miss a snap.
Sewell could certainly play against the Buccaneers on Sunday without practicing all week. Still, a return to the practice field (even in limited fashion) on Friday would be nice to see. Otherwise, it'll be harder to believe he only missed practice on Wednesday, and likely Thursday, for "precautionary reasons".
