The atmosphere at Ford Field for the Detroit Lions' Sunday night season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Not every game is a playoff game, so you have to keep those expectations tempered. Breaking sound records is not easy to do, they were usually set due to specific circumstances. The home field advantage of Ford Field though, does continue to exist. Numerous false starts were influenced by crowd noise.
Even though the Lions jumped out to a 17-3 lead, the victory nearly slipped away. Trailing 20-17 with fewer than five minutes remaining the defense had to make a stand against the Rams and then the Lions offense had to get into field goal range. Once all of that happened, new kicker Jake Bates had to make a pressure field goal to send the game to overtime. Bates connected, the Lions won the coin toss and basically ran down the field to victory.
A couple of stand out performances below to wide receiver Jameson Williams who had 121 yards receiving on five catches with a touchdown and added 13 yards more on the ground. He had more than double the yards receiving than the next leading Lions' receiver. David Montgomery ended the game with 91 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Most of his influence came on the final drive in overtime where he and the offense basically ran the ball at will to the winning touchdown.
The Lions won the game even though there were some things that didn’t go too well. Both St. Brown and LaPorta were held relatively quiet in the pass game and the defense struggled at times to find answers to the Rams quick passing game. Stafford often got rid of the ball quickly as he was playing behind a banged up offensive line.
The Lions are 1-0. We discuss the victory in this week's episode of the "Not The Same Old Lions Podcast".
