It was great to see Hendon Hooker getting in some meaningful game action, even if it wasn’t perfect.  There was a question during the week if he’d even be available to play in the contest.  That led the Lions to signing quarterback Jake Fromm.  Coach Campbell said Hooker had some good moments and bad moments, but was encouraged overall.  The question remains will the Lions feel comfortable heading into the season with Hendon as the No. 2 quarterback for this team.  Unless the Lions make a move to bring in another quarterback with more experience than Jake Fromm, I believe that answer is yes.

When it comes to catching the ball, there is still concern about the Lions having a taller option on the outside.  Antione Green was lost to injury and both Donovan Peoples-Jones and Daurice Fountain have had moments in camp, but have yet to show something in one of the first two preseason games.  The game against Pittsburgh may be the last opportunity for one of these guys to step up and claim that role.  Coach Campbell said the team is still looking for that position to be filled.  He said they’d like it to come from someone currently on the roster, but will look at all options.

When it comes to kicking, Jake Bates made more believers on Saturday.  He hit all four field goals he attempted, including the game winner as time expired.  While he was perfect in field goal attempts, he did miss an extra point.  After the game Coach Campbell talked about the growth of Bates and mentioned that while there is progress he still expects there to still be some growing pains.  Sounds like the Lions may have found their kicker.  We discussed it in more detail in the podcast.
