Nate Sudfeld reportedly suffered torn ACL in Lions' preseason finale vs. Panthers

Not that he would have made the Lions' roster, but Nate Sudfeld's 2023 season is reportedly over due to a torn ACL.

Nate Sudfeld was clinging to a potential roster spot with the Detroit Lions going into the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. He needed a good showing to advance the idea three quarterbacks could be kept on the 53-man roster.

Sudfeld suffered what looked to be a very bad leg injury against the Panthers. Monday morning,ESPN's Adam Schefter reported it to be a torn ACL, which would of course end his season before it starts.

During his press conference on Monday morning, Lions head coach Dan Campbell would not confirm Schefter's report when asked if it was an ACL tear for Sudfeld. But his words weren't all that optimistic about the injury.

"I’m not going to confirm that. He’s getting a second opinion right now,” “Well, if it is the deal with Nate, it’s awful. I hate that for him. That’s tough, because Nate’s given us everything that he’s had. He came in last year and brought something to us. Somebody we were very comfortable with, enough to sign him back. So I hate that if that’s the way it goes here.”"

Detroit Lions roster: What's next for Nate Sudfeld?

The Lions are most likely to put Sudfeld on IR, if the torn ACL is confirmed, which would end his 2023 season. But, pending the second opinion Campbell mentioned, he may think he can play this season and ask to be released with an injury settlement. Either thing would be done by the Lions before 4 p.m. ET Tuesday afternoon.

Teddy Bridgewater took a confirmed firm grip on the No. 2 quarterback spot with a solid showing against the Panthers. Sudfeld would have ideally had a chance at an opportunity elsewhere after being let go by the Lions, but that is now not in the cards due to an unfortunate injury in a preseason gam
