Lions tight end Sam LaPorta suffered sprained ankle vs. Cardinals

It seems like it could be a lot worse, but Lions tight end Sam LaPorta suffered a sprained ankle on Sunday.

For a stretch of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals, it seemed a Detroit Lions' player was felled by an injury after every other play. Among them was tight end Sam LaPorta, who was carted to the locker room just before halftime. The cart is always alarming to see, but it being so close to halftime seems to have dictated the move to cart LaPorta off.

LaPorta was confirmed after the game, by head coach Dan Campbell, to have suffered a sprained right ankle.

LaPorta was back on the field for the Lions' first possession of the third quarter. But after running across the formation and blocking on the second play of that series, he limped to the sideline and was seen with an ice pack on his injured ankle. He was ruled questionable to return, but returned to the game again for a stretch before limping off again. He finished the game with two catches for 36 yards.

Sam LaPorta injury update: How much time might the Lions' TE miss?

LaPorta can be seen blocking downfield on the Lions' "hook and ladder" touchdown on Sunday. Cardinals safety Budda Baker made a late (and destined to be futile?) diving attempt to tackle Jahmyr Gibbs, and knocked LaPorta down in the end zone.

All the injury experts on Twitter have made their attempts to diagnose LaPorta. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the Lions' tight end suffered a low ankle sprain, pending further tests to determine the severity.

Update, Sept. 23, 12:55 p.m ET: Fowler has followed up with a report saying tests confirmed it is indeed a low ankle sprain for LaPorta.

It appears LaPorta has avoided a dreaded high ankle sprain, which typically equates to more time missed than a low ankle sprain ordinarily would. So that's good news if it holds. Campbell may have some updates about all of Sunday's injuries on Monday, including LaPorta. In terms of any time he may miss, that's unlikely to made clear so early in the week.

The Lions have an extra day between games before taking on the Seattle Seahawks next Monday night, followed by their bye in Week 5.
