With his splits as stark as they are, Lions quarterback Jared Goff is an ideal option in best ball fantasy football.

If you deployed him the right weeks, and ignored occasional bad advice, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was quite useful in fantasy football last year. From Week 13-17, crunch time when leagues are won and lost, he was a top-5 fantasy quarterback four times in five weeks.

But Goff's best games strongly correlated to playing at home last season. Five of his six top-10 weekly finishes were home games, while all his finishes of QB20 or worse (five times, counting Week 18) were on the road. When he was startable/usable, he was very good. Otherwise, often not so much.

So Goff's home-road splits from 2022 are not a shock to see.

Home (nine games): 65.8 percent completion rate, 23 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 274.7 yards per game, 109.3 passer rating
Road (eight games): 64.2 percent completion rate, 6 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 245.8 yards per game, 87.4 passer rating

It's also fair to recall how Goff played some very tough defenses on the road last year (New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets). His career home-road splits are not as dramatic as last year, but they are noticeable.

Jared Goff is an ideal quarterback for best ball fantasy football

For the uninitiated, best ball fantasy football is essentially "draft it, and forget it." You draft a team, and your highest-scoring players in a given week are automatically your lineup that week. No tough lineup decisions, no regret about having benched a high-scoring player in a week they went off....less stress.

Over at Underdog Fantasy, Goff is going off the board at QB17 right now. His precise ADP (pick 128.8 overall) is in the 11th round for 12-team leagues.

In season-long traditional re-draft leagues, Goff is a QB2 that you can ideally line up to your QB1's bye week with a favorable-looking matchup. But in best ball, that is not a concern.

So the Lions' signal caller, in the tier of fantasy quarterbacks he's in, is as ideal as it gets for a best ball option. His best weeks will help you, and his worst weeks won't (or shouldn't) matter.
