Jimbo Fisher has been circling the hot seat at Texas A&M, and on Sunday morning (after a win on Saturday) he was fired as the Aggies' head coach. Fisher is getting a massive buyout, and now the Aggies will start their search for a new head coach.
The list of candidates to replace Fisher are of course coming out in droves, as expected. Who they could get is the question, since expectations are high there and the high level results have been fleeting more than consistent. A college coach at a major program who's got a good situation would need to be convinced to leave for College Station with a massive contract, or have tie to the area and/or the program. For others on the college level, Texas A&M would be a step up in job class.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic offered up his list of candidates to replace Fisher. There are the expected, like Duke head coach and former Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning is another prominently mentioned.
Then Feldman went a little off the rails and outside the box, as Texas A&M may have to in order to find their next coach.
There is no absolutely no chance Dan Campbell leaves the Lions for Texas A&M
Lions head coach Dan Campbell was born in Clifton, Texas, and he's a Texas A&M alum. On that latter note, Feldman called Campbell a "big wild-card wish" candidate to replace Fisher.
Texas A&M may leave no stones unturned in the search to replace Fisher, and interest in Campbell would be well-founded on a certain level based on what he's doing in Detroit. But he has never coached at the college level, and it's fair to assume his interest in doing so is mild at best with all that being a college head coach comes with.
Texas A&M may go through whatever back channels to see if Campbell is interested in coming back to replace Fisher. But it takes two to tango, and the Lions' head coach is sure to say no thank you if his alma mater extends its hand.
