Lions feel like easy suitor for wide receiver with interest from multiple teams

The Detroit Lions should be taking a look at available wide receiver options, and they seem like a prime suitor for one that reportedly has some trade interest out there.

After Dan Campbell called for someone to step up in the Detroit Lions' wide receiver room, it's fair to say no one this side of undrafted rookie Isaiah Williams did. Even if Williams makes the 53-man roster, as he should, there could be some eye on wide receivers who are available to see if there might be a fit.

On the opposite end of the Lions' wide receiver issue is the Houston Texans. They have a surplus at the position, with Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Noah Brown, Robert Woods and John Metchie filling out their depth chart. Truly, they have more capable wide receivers than they have prominent offensive roles to offer.

So Monday's report from Jordan Schultz is not surprising. The NFL insider reported multiple teams have reached out to the Texans about Metchie.

"Sources: Multiple teams have reached out to the to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster. It’s unclear if Houston would move him, but several team are keeping a close eye."

Lions feel like an easy potential suitor for John Metchie

At Alabama in 2020, Metchie had 55 catches for 916 yards and six touchdowns. He followed that with 96 catches for 1,142 yads and eight touchdowns in 2021, which made him into a second-round pick in the 2022 draft (44th overall to the Texans).

A leukemia diagnosis wiped out Metchie's rookie season. He returned to the field last year, with 16 catches for 158 yards in 16 games (310 offensive snaps). As Schultz noted he had 10 catches for 100 yards with a touchdown this preseason, which has apparently spurred plenty of interest from teams.

Russell Brown of Lions Wire reminded us about the Brad Holmes-Alabama players thing, for whatever it might be worth.

When calling for what he thought the Lions' needed from a wide receiver, Campbell specifically mentioned the departed Josh Reynolds. Metchie (6-foot, 195 pounds) is three inches shorter than Reynolds, but weighs basically the same and a lot of his evaluations before the 2022 draft point to a similar skill set.

As Schultz was sure to add to his report, it's unclear if the Texans would move Metchie. But multiple teams have called to see if he's available or are "keeping a close eye", and it's easy to think the Lions are one of them.
