Lions add a couple depth players before resuming practice
After the preseason opener against the New York Giants last Thursday night, the Detroit Lions had a couple days off before they return to the practice field on Sunday. Between Saturday night and late Sunday morning, two roster additions have been reportedly been made.
Per the agency that represents him on Saturday evening, the Lions have signed offensive lineman Jamarco Jones.
On Sunday, according to multiple reports via his agent Deryk Gilmore, the Lions are also signing linebacker Abraham Beauplan.
The Lions have had their offensive line depth thinned over the last few weeks. Rookie guard Christian Mahogany is on the NFI (non-football injury) list due to an illness, with no clear indication when he'll come off it. Guard Netane Muti was put on IR last week. Second-year guard/tackle Connor Galvin suffered what's been reported to be a season-ending torn MCL in the preseason opener.
Update. 1:00 p.m. ET: Head coach Dan Campbell said Mahogany is back in the building, but he won't practice this week.
Update, 1:10 p.m. ET: After Campbell's press conference on Sunday, the Lions announced the following roster moves.
Detroit Lions roster moves: Who are Jamarco Jones and Abraham Beauplan?
Drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2018 Draft, Jones played collegiately at Ohio State, and alongside Lions' left tackle Taylor Decker for two seasons. Decker is represented by the same agency as Jones.
Seattle's plans for Jones to their future left tackle never got off the ground. He spent his entire rookie season on IR due to a high ankle sprain. The following season, he started three games at right guard as an injury replacement while also seeing snaps at left guard and left tackle. Over the next two seasons, Jones played in 21 games but started only four as injuries continued to impede him.
Jones signed a two-year deal with the Tennessee Titans in 2022. He spent that entire season on IR due to another injury. He entered 2023 training camp as a top candidate to be the Titans' starting right tackle, but he was cut in early August after starting multiple fights during camp (including one with star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons). No other team picked him up.
Jones has played in 36 regular season games at guard and tackle, with seven starts, but he has not played a regular season snap since 2021 with the Seahawks.
Beauplan was a three-year starter at Marshall after transferring from Navarro College, including a 110-tackle season with 11 tackles for loss in 2021. He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie in 2023, spending time on their practice squad last season.
Lions linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez did not participate in the second joint practice against the Giants last week, and he did not play in the preseason opener.
