Jerry Jacobs finally set to lose playing time as Lions' No. 2 cornerback
Jerry Jacobs has a team-high three interceptions this season, but he has mostly struggled and if the Detroit Lions has some able to replace him they would have done it sooner. With Kindle Vildor being signed to the active roster for Week 14 against the Chicago Bears, it seemed like it could start to happen.
Jacobs still played 75 percent of the Lions' defensive snaps last Sunday (53 snaps). Vildor played 17 defensive snaps (24 percent), as he directly replaced Jacobs for multiple series.
The data differs some based on the source, but Jacobs has an awful grade from Pro Football Focus this year (57.0). He is among the worst corners in the league in terms of yardage and touchdowns allowed. If Emmanuel Moseley had been healthy, he would have usurped Jacobs as the starter opposite Cameron Sutton several weeks ago.
Vildor had three tackles with a tackle for loss against the Bears. He was limited by cramping late in the game, but he was the second-highest graded Lions' defender in the game by PFF (68.0), while Jacobs was the second-worst (47.7 PFF grade).
Jerry Jacobs lined up to lose more snaps to Kindle Vildor as Lions' No. 2 CB
On Monday, via Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News, head coach Dan Campbell talked about Vildor with an easy to read expectation he will play more moving forward.
“I thought it was solid,” Campbell said of Vildor's debut. “He did some good things for us.”“There’s a few things (holding him back), just getting up to speed with our terminology, how we do things, that we gotta get him caught up a little bit more on, But all in all, I thought that he was what we thought he would be. He’s competitive, he’s smart and he’s pretty crafty.”
Jacobs is not being outright benched, as Campbell said he sees he and Vildor "kind of working in there a little bit together." But Vildor is lined up play more after his solid Lions' debut, and it's about time someone was in place to threaten Jacobs' playing time.
