'Ideal' top pick for Lions also represents dream draft fit for Detroit

The Detroit Lions could have an ideal fit in Missouri edge rusher Darius Robinson, but it also represents a dream scenario given his connection to the city and a local 2024 NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft is full of great stories every year, but the Detroit Lions have the opportunity to make an extra special dream come true in their hometown this year.

Detroit needs more toughness and help on defense, specifically at pass rusher. Fortunately, there's a prospect that fits that exact mold which could be available when the Lions select with the 29th pick in the first-round.

Missouri's Darius Robinson has been a standout in the pre-draft process. That's led many to project the Lions pick him in a few week's time. The latest projection for that comes via NFL.com's Chad Reuter, who identified him as one of two ideal top picks for Detroit.

"Even at 285 pounds, Robinson showed he could stand up on the edge in his final year at Missouri. Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport could use a young apprentice, especially since Davenport is coming off a season-ending injury."

Already, Robinson has been tied to the Lions in mock drafts, so it wouldn't be a big surprise to see the Lions add him to a defensive line. With cornerback looking like a deep position, the Lions may have no trouble going with an edge rusher in the first round.

Darius Robinson addition is dream draft scenario for Detroit Lions

Robinson hasn't held back sharing his love for the Motor City, and specifically the Lions, during the pre-draft process. It's become clear that being able to be selected by his hometown team in his home city would be a dream scenario for him.

As Robinson told "The Rich Eisen Show," he grew up watching sports in Detroit, including the Detroit Tigers. His first love was the Lions though, and he understands how special it would be to join a team on the rise.

"Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, that whole crew. Every Sunday when me and my mom would leave church, we cut the Lions game on Fox, so those are my earliest memories of the Lions. That'd be awesome (if they drafted me). Their defensive line, (Aidan) Hutchinson is elite. I love watching Hutchinson on tape. Their defense, the team. This would be an amazing opportunity so we'll see what happens."

The Lions drafting a homegrown player like Robinson with their first pick would be a wonderful moment with the draft in Detroit, but he also seems to fit the Lions' culture based on what he said the team that drafts him will get.

"They'll get a guy that's team-first. I really believe in low ego, high output so whatever the team needs me to do. Also, a versatile defensive lineman who can line up in any alignment and play fast and physical, but most importantly, be a great teammate and somebody you can count on."

Robinson may be hoping the Lions draft him, and it's a scenario fans may be wishing for too.
