Hendon Hooker injury update: When will Lions rookie quarterback be on the active roster?
After he was drafted, of course with his recovery from a torn ACL last season at Tennessee in mind, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said this would be a "redshirt year" for Hendon Hooker. Nothing would be rushed, and the Lions are in position to not have to rush anything. But by all accounts, Hooker has been progressing well.
Hooker's minimum four-week stay on the Non-Football Injury list has long expired, so he could be added to the active roster at any time. Back in October, Campbell had an update on the rookie quarterback.
He’s doing well. He’s progressing very well,” “Certainly, there’s no setback, he’s doing well. I can’t really give you a true timetable right now. But he is doing good."
Yeah, still hopeful (for this year). But there again, there is a lot that can happen between, now and, OK -- ‘Is it time to pull him up? Is it not?’ You never know what can happen with this roster between now and then. But he’s doing good.”
On Monday, come off the bye week, Campbell was asked about a potential timeline for Hooker.
Hendon Hooker update: When will the Lions' rookie quarterback be on the active roster?
Via Lions Wire, here's what Campbell said about putting Hooker on the active roster.
"We’re not there yet. “But he’s getting better.”
With Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater holding down the top two spots on the depth chart, the Lions' won't (fingers crossed regarding injuries) need Hooker to play this season. But as Pride of Detroit noted, adding him to the 53-man roster would provide the ability for him to practice and get a different level of work in. So that drives the reasoning to put him on the active roster.
As expected though, the Lions are in no rush here. The next update we get on Hooker might come via the announcement he has been put on the 53-man roster.
