Former Detroit Lions offensive lineman hints at possible return
The Detroit Lions could certainly be in the market for experienced offensive line depth, and along that line a former Lion has hinted at a possible return.
Most teams would not do well if they lost one of their starting offensive tackles. But the Detroit Lions would be up a particular you-know-what creek if they were to lose Taylor Decker or Penei Sewell for any extended time. The first half of the 2021 season, when Decker was sidelined with a hand injury, showed that obviously.
Behind Decker and Sewell right now at offensive tackle, most prominently competing for a roster spot(s), is Matt Nelson, veteran Germain Ifedi and Obinna Eze. Eze, an undrafted rookie in 2022, is garnering some buzz as a darkhorse to make the 53-man roster, while reviews of Nelson and Ifedi's work so far in camp have not been very glowing.
So in some sense, the Lions could be looking for options to come in and back up Decker/Sewell.
Former Lions' offensive lineman hints at potential return
On Saturday, former Lions' offensive lineman Oday Aboushi tweeted this.
So it appears Aboushi had a visit, and probably some kind of a workout, with the Lions on Saturday.
Aboushi played for the Lions in 2019 and 2020, starting a total of 10 games between right guard and right tackle. He spent the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, starting five games at right guard. He played in 16 games, with four starts at right guard, for the Los Angeles Rams last season.
A fifth-round pick by the New York Jets back in 2013, Aboushi has made 51 starts across multiple positions and seven NFL teams in his career.
Aboushi would bring much-needed experience and a bit of versatility to the Lions' offensive line depth if he were to come back. A signing before joint practices against the New York Giants this coming week could be coming.
