Easy trade candidate for the Detroit Lions gets mentioned again

Some might say it's a reach, but an easy trade candidate for the Lions has garnered mention again.

In 2022, John Cominsky went from June waiver claim to a key piece of the Detroit Lions' defensive line. So it was an easy decision to re-sign him to a multi-year deal in 2023. His production fell year over year, and on a short list of potential cut candidates for the Lions this offseason Cominsky's name sort of surfaced.

It was not a surprise Cominsky agreed to a pay cut if that meant he could stick around. His versatility and toughness (He missed just three games after suffering a broken thumb in Week 2 of the 2022 season, and he played the rest of the season with a club on his hand) has of course adhered him to head coach Dan Campbell too.

If nothing else, the Lions have plenty of competition for spots and roles on the defensive front. Where Cominsky fits in amongst Marcus Davenport, Josh Paschal, Mehki Wingo, Mathieu Betts, etc. is unclear. At minimum, he's on the roster bubble and needs to have a big training camp/preseason.

John Cominsky again surfaces as trade candidate for the Lions

Cominsky was previously mentioned as a preseason trade candidate for the Lions by Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report, as truly one of few players they could consider trading.

But it makes a level of sense to trade Cominsky if it comes to it, and Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network has him on his list comprised of one trade candidate for each team, broadening the scope to this season in general.

"The Detroit Lions are incredibly deep at the edge position, with Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport leading the team’s talented group. Therefore, John Cominsky could potentially be moved this upcoming season, as he will potentially take a backseat to Davenport and others."

Cominsky should not pigeonholed as just an edge rusher, but the point remains. He's a potentially tradeable asset for the Lions. If not now, before the season, then maybe by the trade deadline. It would probably take getting an offer for him to be moved, rather than him being actively shopped, but it won't be a surprise if Cominsky is traded at some point.
