Detroit Lions trade rumors: An edge rusher target that makes sense

If the Detroit Lions look to add an edge rusher via the trade market, a possibility that makes some sense has been put out there.

By this point, the Detroit Lions issues getting after the passer are well-documented, lamented and accounted for. Finding ways to fix it are a different story, even if Aidan Hutchinson pointed to a fairly simple place to start.

With James Houston out at least 6-8 weeks with a fractured ankle, the Lions have lost a fairly significant piece of their pass rush. There are some possible free agent options to consider, and the trade market could yield some options too. But it looks like the Lions are content, at least for now, to see if who they've already got can step up.

But on the other hand, general manager Brad Holmes won't sit on his hands if the Lions' pass rush is lacking for much longer. That doesn't necessarily mean giving up a notable draft pick or player, to get someone who can be useful.

Detroit Lions trade rumors: A deal for an edge rusher than could make a lot of sense

As part of his trade block piece heading into Week 3, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report had Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett among the 10 players. And, of course, the Lions as one of two team fits.

"The Lions might also be wise to take a look at Barnett, as standout pass-rusher James Houston is set to miss "at least" 6-8 weeks with a fractured ankle."

Barnett was a first-round pick by the Eagles in 2017, but it's safe to say he hasn't performed to that draft status with 21.5 career sacks. But he does have three seasons (2019-2021) with over 20 quarterback pressures on his resume.

Barnett tore his ACL in the 2022 season opener against the Lions, coincidentally, and he has continually fallen lower in a deep group of edge rushers for the Eagles. Hence why he was given permission to seek a trade late this preseason.

In line with that minimized role, Barnett had played just 30 defensive snaps over the first two games this season.

Barnett presumably still wants to play for another team, the cost to get him would be low and he's slated to be a free agent after the season. Sounds like an ideal trade target for the Lions to add an edge rusher, should they go that direction.
