Detroit Lions reveal their team captains for 2023 season
By Max DeMara
The Detroit Lions are ready to kick off a new season. But before they do that, the team revealed the team captains.
The 2023 Lions captains were revealed on Tuesday. Offensive captains are Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell. Defensively, Alex Anzalone and Charles Harris lead the way. On special teams, Jalen Reeves-Maybin gets the nod.
Being named a captain speaks to how highly the team thinks of players on the list. Offensively, it was no shock to see the trio of Goff, St. Brown and Sewell. All three players routinely lead by example.
Defensively, it may be a surprise to see Harris included. But Aaron Glenn recently explained how the veteran edge rusher is a vocal leader.
"We know how special he is as a player, but more than that, as a person. He's quiet, but when he speaks, people listen. That's the good thing about Charles (Harris). You go out there and watch him practice, it's all-out every time. Looking forward to him getting back to his 2021 form. I expect him to do that and he's expecting to do that himself."

Goff and Anzalone are both Lions' captains for the third straight year. Reeves-Maybin was also the Lions’ special teams captain in 2021, but left in free agency to sign with the Texans in 2022. He came back to the Lions this offseason, and he’s back to being a captain.
Dan Campbell congratulates Detroit Lions' 2023 captains
Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed the captains to the media on Tuesday, and as he did he provided insight on the process and praise for the new captains.
"Voted on by their teammates. Every one of those guys are worthy of that position. It's an honor. We're fortunate to have a lot of guys that I would really call leaders on this team. We're in a good spot, so congratulations to those guys."

As Campbell explained, every player included in the group is up to the task on a team full of leadership. St. Brown and Sewell have clearly, quickly established themselves as team leaders.
