Running Backs (5)

1. David Montgomery
2. Jahmyr Gibbs
3. Mohamed Ibrahim
4. Craig Reynolds
5. Jason Cabinda (FB)

Ibrahim could outright become the Lions' No. 3 running back, and knock Reynolds off the roster completely. But I just couldn't quite get all the way to cutting Reynolds when shaping this 53-man projection.

Wide Receivers (6)

1. Amon-Ra St. Brown (slot)
2. Marvin Jones
3. Josh Reynolds
4. Kalif Raymond
5. Antoine Green
6. Maurice Alexander
7. Jameson Williams (six-game suspension)

Come Week 7, when Williams is eligible to play, someone will lose a spot on the active roster (most likely Alexander). A absence of note here (for some) might be Tom Kennedy, who may have another star turn during preseason games and put himself in the conversation for a spot on the 53.

Tight Ends (3)

1. Sam LaPorta
2. Brock Wright
3. James Mitchell

LaPorta has immediately asserted himself as the Lions' best tight end, as he should have based on what was in place. Wright is fine as a No. 2, and Mitchell's potential entering his second season makes him interesting. Shane Zylstra is the cut of note here.

Offensive Line (8)

Five starters arranged from left to right by position
1. Taylor Decker
2. Jonah Jackson
3. Frank Ragnow
4. Halapoulivaati Vaitai
5. Penei Sewell
6. Graham Glasgow (OG/C)
7. Colby Sorsdal (OG/OT)
8. Matt Nelson (OT)

Vaitai and Glasgow are set to compete for the starting job at right guard, but Glasgow's ability to play center if Ragnow's toe issue acts up makes him a valuable depth piece if he doesn't win the job. Sorsdal sticks on the 53-man roster based on his own merit, and the notion the Lions would lose him if they tried to sneak him back on to the practice squad at final cuts.
