Wednesday was the first day of Detroit Lions training camp. We new about a few players who were placed on the Active/PUP or Active/NFI lists a few days ago, as expected regarding those on the PUP list with rookie offensive lineman Giovanni Manu on the NFI list.

Wednesday morning, the Lions announced cornerback Carlton Davis, wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, cornerback Amik Robertson and wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith have been placed on the Active/NFI (Non-Football Injury) list. The NFI designation means those injuries occurred away from the team facility.

In a non-injury related move, the Lions also waived offensive lineman Matt Farniok on Wednesday.

It's important to reinforce that players can come off the Active/PUP and Active/NFI lists at any point during training camp, and during his opening press conference head coach Dan Campbell had updates on the players who were previously placed on the Active/PUP list: Brian Branch, DJ Reader and Marcus Davenport (h/t to Nolan Bianchi of the Detroit News).

"These guys are slowly going,” Campbell said. “I think Davenport’s gonna be a little quicker than Branch is, but they’ll both be out there in some capacity, which is a good sign. No setbacks. We’re moving right along.”

Davenport and Branch, both coming off ankle injuries/surgeries, took part in walkthroughs on Wednesday. Things will go a little slower with Reader, who's coming off a torn quad tendon late last season.

"We’re not in any hurry with him (Reader),” Campbell added. “But he’s doing well. He’s getting his strength back. The injury is healed; it’s just a matter of getting him to that point where now we feel comfortable getting him out there and competing with others.”

3 Lions players quickly come off injured lists

According to Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman, Manu was also on the practice field in some degree on Wednesday. Which means he, Branch and Davenport are already off their respective injury lists, which makes it odd to have put them there in the first place.

A notable absence from the Lions' injury lists as camp gets going is cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The Lions signed him in 2023, coming off a torn ACL the previous season with the 49ers. He had some setbacks in his recovery that caused him to miss last year's training camp. Then he tore his other ACL two snaps into his Lions' debut (basically a year to the day from the first injury).

Rookie guard Christian Mahogany is not on an injury list, but reporters on the ground at Allen Park did not spot him during Wednesday's practice.

Update: 6:00 p,m. ET: The Lions have removed Davis, Peoples-Jones, Robertson and Smith from the NFI list. That leaves Reader as the only remaining player on an injured list at the close of business after Day 1 of camp.
