After two days of intense joint practices, and a matching $200,000 fine for each team due to all the fighting that went on, the Detroit Lions and New York Giants will have their preseason opener on Thursday night.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has essentially confirmed starters won't play in the preseason opener, and any that do surely won't play a whole lot. But ongoing position battles, and the questions in some of them (No. 2 quarterback, WR3, can Jake Bates assert himself as the kicker?), will make the game worth paying attention to.

The first NFL game action for Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker is enough to watch the preseason opener. It's unclear as of this writing if he'll start Thursday night or if Nate Sudfeld will, but Hooker should get a full half of action.

It will also be interesting to watch how the Lions and Giants approach the new kickoff format from a kicking strategy perspective. It's fair to assume little to nothing will be given away in preseason games, but the whole deal is broadly new and interesting.

From a Lions' perspective, who will they use as a kickoff returner?

Here's how you can watch and listen to the Lions-Giants preseason opener.
