Announcing team captains was thing around the NFL on Monday, since it's officially game week before Week 1, and the Detroit Lions joined the party in announcing theirs.

The Lions will have six captains this season:

-QB Jared Goff
-WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
-OT Penei Sewell
-DE Aidan Hutchinson
-LB Alex Anzalone
-LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin

Last year the Lions' six captains were Goff, St. Brown, Sewell, Anzalone, Charles Harris and Reeves-Maybin. Harris' two-year contract expired this offseason, and he was not re-signed.

Goff and Anzalone have now both been team captains each year under head coach Dan Campbell.

Sewell and St. Brown, who were both rewarded with big contract extensions this offseason, will enter their second consecutive season as team captains.

Reeves-Maybin is also entering his second straight season as a Lions' captain, though he was also a captain during his previous stint with the Lions. He is also the new president of the NFLPA after being elected in March.

Detroit Lions name their 2024 captains

Hutchinson, the second overall pick in the 2022 draft, a two-time captain during his college career at Michigan and the Lions' two-time reigning sack leader, is a first-time captain for the team this year and an ideal choice to fill the slot vacated by Harris.

It's fair to assume Hutchinson won't be giving up the "C" on his Lions' jersey anytime soon, now that he has it. He's a core player for the foreseeable future in Detroit, just like Sewell and St. Brown are.

League rules now allow teams to name up to eight captains (10 were allowed prior to 2023), and there are teams who maxed out this year. Only six can go to midfield for the pregame coin toss though, so why have more? So the Lions landed on the ideal number of captains, and the six guys they chose for 2024 were ultimately pretty obvious.
