Detroit Lions offseason schedule: When are OTAs, rookie minicamps
On Friday, the NFL announced the offseason workout calendar for all 32 teams. Here's a rundown of what the three phases of the offseason program entail, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Phase One consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation only.
For the Detroit Lions, players like wide receiver Kalif Raymond and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley likely fall into the category of those who will be rehabbing injuries during Phase 1.
Phase Two consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual or group instruction and drills, as well as "perfect play drills," and drills and plays with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, conducted at a walk-through pace. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
Phase Three consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or "OTAs". No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.
No live contact is permitted during any offseason training work. Some teams (never the Lions, if memory serves) have gotten into trouble with the league for violating that rule over the years though.
Detroit Lions 2024 offseason workout calendar
First Day: Monday, April 15
Rookie Minicamp: May 10-12
OTAs: May 21-23; May 29-31; June 10-12
Mandatory Minicamp: June 4-6
In addition to these dates, the Lions will also have a rookie minicamp for their draft class, any undrafted rookies they sign right after the draft and any players they want to take a look on a tryout basis. That usually takes place, obviously, after the draft in the first or second weekend of May (May 4-5 or May 11-12 this year). The exact date of rookie minicamp will be announced at some point, probably right after the draft.
