The Detroit Lions completed their OTA and minicamp slate this month, and now comes a break before training camp starts in July. A lot of players will work independently at training facilities or by organizing workout sessions with teammates. Others will mix in rest for their bodies and a vacation with family before the grind to get ready for and play a season. Others will continue to rehab injuries over the next month.
On Tuesday, the NFL announced training camp report dates for each team. There are a variety of approaches by teams, from rookies and veterans reporting on the same day, to a week between rookies and veterans reporting to veterans reporting a day or two after rookies do. In general, with a nod to the first dates rookies will report, we are less than a month from training camp starting.
Detroit Lions' 2024 training camp report dates
Lions' rookies will report to Allen Park on July 20. Veterans will report on July 23. The first camp practice will come a few days after that. The exact dates of training camp practices, and when fans will be able to attend, have not been released yet. That should come a little later this month.
We know the Lions will have one set of joint practices this year, with the New York Giants in New York before the preseason opener for both teams on Aug. 8. The Lions will fill out their preseason game schedule against the Kansas City Chiefs (Aug. 17) and Pittsburgh Steelers (Aug. 24), with final roster cuts to come after that.
As offseason work wound down, head coach Dan Campbell offered a broadly positive injury report looking toward training camp. The one exception, or question mark, was defensive tackle DJ Reader. He suffered a torn quad tendon while playing for the Cincinnati Bengals late last season, so he may not quite be fully healthy for the start of camp.
