Dan Campbell is fired up by the Detroit Tigers' playoff push
By Max DeMara
The Detroit Lions don't play until Monday night in Week 4, which means they will have plenty of time to be interested spectators for their neighbors across the street at Comerica Park over the weekend.
Fading in early August, the Detroit Tigers have rattled off an impressive 30-11 stretch of baseball since Aug. 11 to stunningly take command in the race for an AL Wild Card spot. As of now, they control their own destiny and are closing in on an improbable playoff berth.
Dan Campbell loves what he sees from the Tigers, especially considering he remembers the team being left for dead around the time the Lions were preparing for training camp.
"It's awesome. Dude, the Tigers were written off in July, right? Man I heard it. I mean, it was like, 'dude, these guys are done' and now look at them. It's awesome."
While Campbell misses his share of Tigers' games, he keeps up on what's going on from afar. This season, he has been particularly impressed with their process.
"I don't get to watch a lot of it obviously with where I'm at. I keep up just knowing what's going on and hearing they won again (and) again. So for that, I'm rooting for those guys. I do love it because I think when you sit in these seats and you do what they're doing in a professional level, it doesn't matter where you're at, you just got to keep improving and improve, improve, improve, improve (and) work, work, work and that's what they've done. You just don't know how many different kinks you're working through. Find the best rotation and figure this out and work on this and work with this and what about this and the lineup. Pretty soon you find it and then you just get better and better and better and that's what they've done. They're playing really good right now so yeah, I'm fired up for them."
There are plenty of parallels between what the Lions did late in 2022 and what the Tigers have done lately. Mostly, the fact that few expected a young team to claw back to respectability so quickly on the national stage. Campbell understands it's a testament to the hard work of manager A.J. Hinch, the coaching staff and the players.
Dan Campbell excited to unveil black uniforms on Monday night
In terms of the Lions, there is also a highly-anticipated event this week that will take place at Ford Field, and it involves the return of a cult favorite jersey that made its way back into the rotation this past offseason.
Finally, the Lions will show off their new black alternate uniforms for the first time since Campbell was a Lions' player. Campbell specifically asked for the black jersey to return after being named head coach in 2021. After the Lions won the NFC North last season, he got his wish.
"I like those uniforms. I know our players do too and it'll be something different. It's a change up. It doesn't mean you're going to win a game, but I like them. They look good."
Between the Tigers making a playoff push and the Lions unveiling a jersey that many have been clamoring for as part of a "Monday Night Football" showcase game, it's an exciting time to be a Detroit sports fan.
