5 quarterbacks the Detroit Lions could sign to bolster their depth chart

On the hunt for a quarterback, here are five options the Lions could consider bringing in.

4. Trevor Siemian

Siemian is a dictionary definition of a journeyman backup quarterback. He made 24 starts for the Denver Broncos over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, post-Peyton Manning, with a season sitting behind Kirk Cousins with the Vikings in 2018. He has made nine starts for three teams (Jets, Saints, Bears) over the last four seasons.

Siemian is the kind of name that induces yawns when talking about backup quarterback options. But as Hooker works through concussion protocol, he could eventually replace Sudfeld as the No. 3/emergency quarterback option. And unlike Sudfeld, he has actually played recently (and in his career, for that matter).

3. Blaine Gabbert

As easily tabbed first-round disappointment (10th overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft), Gabbert has forged a long career as a valued veteran backup. Almost half of his career starts (24 of 49) came in his first two seasons, but coaches like Bruce Arians and Andy Reid have valued him highly. If not the opportunity (if you can call it that) to add Carson Wentz, Gabbert might be back in Kansas City as Patrick Mahomes' backup this year.

Gabbert, at minimum, is a better version of Sudfeld as a possible No. 3 quarterback option and he's a likely equal as a veteran mentor for Hooker. That would seem to make him ideal for the Lions as they consider options to fill their quarterback void, or outright replace Sudfeld eventually.
