5. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones
The Chiefs have allowed Jones to reach unrestricted free agency, which itself is a rare mistake by that front office. They could franchise tag him a second time, but that price tag will would land north of $33 million. A return to Kansas City is of course on the table until shown otherwise, but he could be allowed to test the open market for the first time in his career.
The Lions could use an upgrade next to Alim McNeill on the interior defensive line, and Jones can also line up out on the edge as a five-technique. The Lions value that kind of versatility, independent of a supreme talent like Jones is.
The fly in the ointment of a pursuit of Jones by the Lions is the obvious one-Cost. He might not get a five-year deal entering his age-30 season, but he can and will command a lot of money. Spotrac projects his market value at $28.4 million a year, on a hypothetical three-year deal.
Would Holmes be willing allocate that much of the Lions' current cap space to one player? Even one as great as Jones is? It doesn't feel all that likely, but never say never and this list is not complete without the 5-time Pro Bowler and arguably the best defensive lineman in the league.
