5 Detroit Lions who must shine in Week 3 vs. Cardinals

If the Detroit Lions are going to get back on a winning track Sunday, these five players will have to stand out.

2. DE Marcus Davenport

However skewed by the rushing production of some in recent years (Justin Fields), the Lions' struggles with mobile quarterbacks is there to be seen. Glenn has again made it clear he is not a fan of having a quarterback spy, so it will be a collective effort to contain Kyler Murray on Sunday.

Davenport had a nice Week 1, then he missed Week 2 with a groin injury and now he's off the Week 3 injury report entirely. Getting after Murray will require a disciplined, yet-aggressive pass rush approach, maintaining rush lanes but taking advantage of the opportunities his propensity to extend plays can provide.

As awesome as he has been, the Lions' pass rush has not been strictly the Aidan Hutchinson show so far. Everyone will be important again on Sunday, but I'm spotlighting Davenport on the opposite edge from Hutchinson as someone who has to have an outstanding performance.

1. QB Jared Goff

After two games where he has not looked anything like the quarterback he has been the past two full seasons, for any variety of reasons, this looks like a nice get-right spot for Goff.

The Cardinals have an exploitable pass defense on all levels, and they also struggle to generate pressure (and generate it quickly for that matter, with the third-slowest time to pressure-2.65 seconds-so far this season according to PFF). We know what pressure, and quick pressure right in his face, does to Goff's effectiveness. The Cardinals aren't equipped to get that done. Even after a fairly lackluster showing in Week 2, particularly from a couple of the interior guys, the Lions' offensive line still has an above-average pass blocking grade (67.0) so far this season.

Better protection than he had at times in Week 2 will be a good start, and the Cardinals also don't blitz a ton to disrupt Goff being able to pick apart their pass defense.

If Goff looks notably off-kilter again on Sunday, then the concern level about him can (and surely will) get very real and it'll be harder for anyone to brush off his struggles as early-season hiccups. The matchup is just too good for him not have a big day, and thus quell any doubts that have come based on the way he looked in the first two games.
