Pat McAfee contributor suggests Lions OC hire so far out there it had to be a bit

If Dan Campbell has to entertain this offensive coordinator candidate, things have not gone well.

The list of candidates being interviewed for the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator job is growing quickly, and the process shows head coach Dan Campell is leaving very few stones unturned. D

Depending on how things go for those candidates in term of other opportunities they're entertaining, Campbell may eventually have to dig deeper into his well of options. That said, the opportunity to be the Lions' offensive coordinator might be better than some head coaching jobs that are out there and that's a clear selling point if Campbell really wants someone.

But if he has to, Campbell is surely ready to go beyond the candidates he's already interviewing to find the right man to run the offense. Ideally, whoever is ultimately hired will still be from outside the comfort zone of great familiarity, with fresh ideas to bring to the mix.

Pat McAfee contributor offers Lions' OC hire that would make fans throw up

On Tuesday's edition of "The Pat McAfee Show", contributor and resident Lions' fan Evan Fox went off the grid to tell the world who he wants as the offensive coordinator.

"I got a name that no one's talking about, that would fit really well in Detroit, if you guys wanna hear that one" Fox said.

As co-host Darius Butler can be heard saying "I already know", Fox continued.

"I think Dan Orlovsky, with his history with the Lions, a former teammate of (Dan Campbell's). The guy knows everything about the Ben Johnson offense. He loves Jared Goff, accurate quarterbacks. All those weapons.."

"Could you imagine Dan Orlovsky...writing up plays for the Detroit Lions next year and sending us to the Super Bowl?"

With his facial expression and tone seemingly showing how he really feels about it if he was genuinely asked for his opinion, McAfee took the lead to "endorse" the idea of Orlovsky becoming the Lions' offensive coordinator.

"Dan Orlovsky back with the Lions, to right the wrong of the 0-16 season", McAfee said. "To right the wrong of the 11-yard end zone. To right the wrong of his story in Detroit, and make it a better one. Alongside a former teammate of his. To bring an idol to Detroit....It writes itself, get Dan-O up there, Foxy that's brilliant."

The tone of McAfee's show sometimes makes you wonder if something like this is a bit or it's a real opinion, no matter who offers it. Fox seemingly toed that line here, while McAfee (which there's nothing wrong with) took it toward the land of make-believe with the way he carried himself on the topic.

Orlovsky of course will live forever in the negative annals of Lions' franchise lore for running out of the back of the end zone, and starting seven games of the 0-16 season in 2008. He once openly had interest in coaching, but last May he told Dan Patrick that interest has "subsided."

Orlovsky is very good in his role as an analyst for ESPN, breaking down film and analyzing offensive schemes from the eyes of a quarterback. But that's a long way from being "in the room", game-planning an offense for an opponent each week and calling plays in the heat of battle on Sundays.

That said, Orlovsky appeared with McAfee on Wednesday and sounded vaguely interested in being the Lions' offensive coordinator.

If Campbell truly has to go so far down a list of offensive coordinator candidates that Orlovsky was somehow on the radar, the search has gone unimaginably awry. And that's if Orlovsky would even consider it, which it seems he wouldn't.

So what would be an all-around nightmare scenario for the Lions next offensive coordinator is, thankfully, not really in play at all. Orlovsky would be on a list of outside the box candidates though, which seems to be the root of Fox's sentiment as his favorite team takes a second run at replacing Ben Johnson.
