One remaining FA target for the Lions might've just written himself off

Joey Bosa doesn't sound too pressed to sign with anyone.

June 1 may shape up to be quite a chaotic day in the NFL.

Amid a quiet offseason for many teams, this date signals the kickoff to what will surely be a ton of releases, and possibly some trades. After June 1, teams can typically save a few million against players they're cutting ties with, which opens the door for them to complete some additional free agency signings ahead of more training camp sessions and preseason preparation.

The Detroit Lions have a few potential cut candidates, with the team having already released Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow before this big date. And, those cuts could open the door for them to add another veteran defender to their roster, such as any one of the remaining decent edge rushers on the market.

One of those edge rushers is Joey Bosa, who just spent last season with the Buffalo Bills. While he wracked up two passes defended, five sacks, and 6.5 stuffs, he hasn't exactly been a hot commodity on the lips of analysts and cap experts looking to match remaining free agents with teams. Bosa could be a decent, cheap get for Detroit to add even more insurance behind Aidan Hutchinson.

However, it doesn't exactly sound like Bosa is rushing to get back into the groove of things:

You can't blame the soon-to-be 31 year old for wanting some time off from the game ahead of his potential 11th season. You need to give your body a ton of rest at that age if you're an edge rusher, which seems to be exactly what Bosa is doing.

But, you've got to wonder if a team like the Lions - a contender - is willing to wait him out.

With changes to the teams' offseason program including no joint practices and no rookie camp, it's clear that they're valuing rest for their players after injuries were too much to overcome in 2025. More rest could mean more time to prep with game tape or with meetings between new coaches, and it could mean fresher legs headed into the 2026 season.

Bosa is doing just that - taking time to heal up from a long 2025 season so that he could, hopefully, be mostly healthy for the 2026 season. He's been quite injury prone, so it makes sense that the veteran wants to take as much time as he can to rehab.

Detroit should still be very much "in" on Bosa if he's willing to take a smaller deal than perhaps anticipated. He's a weathered EDGE who could provide a valuable ear to bend for the rookie Moore.
