The Detroit Lions are going to have stiff competition on the waiver wire once roster cuts begin to hit this coming Sunday.
With similar roster needs, namely on their offensive line, the Lions and Washington Commanders are in a race to claim talent after Sunday's movement. And, the Commanders are 7th on the waiver wire order, while the Lions are 17th.
It stands to reason that the Commanders, given how deeply injured their frontline is, will be doing everything in their power to snag any standout talent from the preseason to bring on board amid an ongoing competition along their starting line. That doesn't mean that the Lions will completely miss out on shoring up at guard or center, though, with one guard specifically worth keeping an eye on: Jordan Meredith.
Jordan Meredith could land in Lions' lap if Las Vegas decides to let him go
Meredith is a potential cut candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders headed into this season, with Just Blog Baby site expert Levi Dombro saying that their depth at guard might make him the odd man out through no major fault of his own:
"Meredith has a strong enough pedigree to be on an NFL roster, and his versatility is the kind of thing that this Raiders coaching staff covets. But with all of the young talent crowding in on his roster spot, Meredith needed to have a much stronger preseason than the one he's had through two games."
Detroit hasn't declared anyone the winner of their ongoing left guard competition, but it's assumed that Christian Mahogany will win that spot. However, the fact that he hasn't already established himself as the obvious starter there is a little concerning. That leaves the door open for someone like Meredith to immediately compete there.

Head coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Tuesday that there's such a tough amount of competition across the board for the Lions and their current roster, but there's also competition yet to be had as the team could still be bringing new guys in throughout this week and the weekend.
They've done something just like that recently by signing center Gus Hartwig ahead of their last preseason game.
Meredith is a five-year veteran who has stuck the longest with the Raiders, but had a stint on the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad back in 2021.
If not for a better backup situation behind Mahogany, they should look to snag Meredith if he hits the wire because they need legitimate competition for him there that isn't oft-injured. Miles Frazier hasn't shown enough in training camp to be that kind of threat, while Ben Bartch hasn't been able to stay healthy for much of camp.
