The Detroit Lions had lots of success stories to discuss the day they set their first 53-man roster of the season, and quite possibly the biggest was on the defensive side of the ball.
It's rare that a sixth-round pick makes such a favorable and immediate impression every step of the way after being selected, but that's exactly what has happened in the case of Skyler Gill-Howard. The rookie out of Texas Tech was impressive in the OTA period, and then parlayed that into the daily practice period of training camp.
Then, during the preseason, Gill-Howard really shined. In the second and third weeks of action, he posted an impressive 88.4 PFF grade, which rated No. 2 overall for defensive tackles. Al Karsten recapped Gill-Howard's impressive closing statement.

The contrast with another similar player at the same defensive position is very interesting. In the final game of the preseason, Levi Onwuzurike was Detroit's lowest graded defender on PFF. In spite of this, the Lions kept him around during final cuts, and are hoping he will stay healthy and finally scratch the surface of the top-level talent they believe he has.
While that is the case, the emergence of Gill-Howard shows that new players are always charging on the depth chart. If he keeps playing well, others further up in the rotation might be bumped down or out. The Lions may have no choice but to keep and play the players who show up consistently and make constant statements to the coaching staff.
Thus far in his career, inconsistency has been Onwuzurike's biggest hallmark. It's a stark contrast to Gill-Howard, who has been one of the most consistent young performers every step of the way since joining the roster.

Why has Gill-Howard been able to represent so quickly for the Lions? It likely has everything to do with the kind of competition he is seeing on a daily basis. Between names such as Tate Ratledge, Christian Mahogany and Juice Scruggs, good competition has been the hallmark this year for the Lions, and it allows all players to push themselves.
Campbell sees the battles up close every single day, and knows the Lions have one of the more talented rosters in the league. That has helped their players to develop well top to bottom when they put in work.
"I like the talent that we have. We got a lot of football players on this roster, and you can't help but get better. I was talking to Tate Ratledge because I think he's had a really good camp, but you go against Alim McNeill every day, you can't help but get better. I think those two working each other (is good) and that's part of it. We talk about (Penei) Sewell and (Aidan) Hutchinson all the time, or Hutchinson when he goes over to Blake Miller's side. You can't get better competition than that, and you're getting that every day of the week."
Having a solid top of the roster benefits the players at the bottom looking to make an impact. There's no doubt that Gill-Howard has benefitted from that immediately upon joining the franchise. His quick ascension has proven that nobody should bet against him playing a role during the regular season.
