Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions are preparing to head to Dallas for a rematch from last year’s late-season affair that ended in controversy over a reporting-as-eligible issue. For those keeping score at home, it’s the third straight season Detroit travels to Dallas. The more important stat though for the Lions coaches and players is that Detroit has lost their last two against Dallas. They want to change that.
Coming off the early bye, it allowed the Lions to get some players healthier, most notably center Frank Ragnow and safety Brian Branch. The Cowboys are also battling injuries, with linebacker Micah Parsons the most prominent. His presence on the field changes the way any offense has to game plan.
Speaking of the Lions offense, wide receiver Tim Patrick looks ready to take another step forward. That doesn’t necessarily mean a lot more catches, but his presence and availability could influence defensive game plans and help others on the Lions offense find space to work. And don’t underestimate what Patrick’s blocking ability can do for the Lions' run game.
This of course will be Jared Goff’s first outing since his “perfect game" against Seattle in Week 4. The Dallas secondary will be looking for more than just incompletions, but also hoping to force turnovers. Avoiding turnovers will be one of the keys to the Lions' success.
Expect David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs to get plenty of work, since the Cowboys are more vulnerable against the run than the pass.
