The Detroit Lions have some key decisions to make as the calander flips to April and the 2026 NFL draft comes into a bigger focus.
Lately, the free agency signings have slowed down, meaning it's likely the Lions are targeting the end of the month for their next upgrades. In terms of need, it's not much of a question that one of the bigger holes on the roster remains at edge rusher.
While the Lions have added a few quality bodies to help the position, it's clear that they are not game-changers alone in the truest sense of the word. Instead of making a splash in free agency or via trade, Detroit will have to turn their attention to the position in the draft.
Fortunately, there's good news for the franchise with that in mind. This year's draft is trending to be one of the deeper spots at edge in recent memory, with no shortage of options to get after the quarterback.
NFL.com anaylst Lance Zierlein recently ranked all the position groups in terms of depth for the impending draft. Not surprisingly, he found edge to be the deepest spot this season, but there is a notable catch.
"There were five edge defenders drafted in last April's first round and 11 selected on Day 2. This year, we have another loaded group of QB hunters. Arvell Reese is a developmental prospect with huge upside, while David Bailey is rush-ready as a true pocket pillager. Rueben Bain Jr. brings unique power, while fellow Miami product Akheem Mesidor is the most skilled rusher in this class. Zion Young majors in block destruction as a run defender, and Malachi Lawrence is getting some buzz behind the scenes."
"This class figures to provide a strong number of future starters, with as many as 17 players poised to come off the board in the first three rounds, but the quality of depth will trail off on Day 3. The edge defenders will rule the first round."
While the Lions are likely to strongly pursue an offensive tackle in the first-round to fill the massive hole left by Taylor Decker, Zierlein's analysis shows why they cannot wait to grab an edge in 2026. Last season, the Lions waited until the sixth-round to add a pass rusher of any kind, and it's something that simply cannot happen again.
If the edge position does indeed fall off a cliff by day three, the Lions have to jump early on and address the spot with their prospect of choice very early in the draft.
If Lions won't add a top free agent, they must draft a star defensive end
So far, the Lions have looked very averse to adding a top-flight edge rusher. Detroit has internal buget contstranits they seem to be worrying about, which has prevented them from hitting the market aggressively. With that being the case, they have to hit the draft very hard for a top edge.
Not since Aidan Hutchinson fell into Detroit's lap in 2022 have the Lions prioritized the edge position within the first five rounds of the draft. Simply put, that can't happen anymore. If Brad Holmes is going to go the developmental route, he has to make a big swing at the position very early and find a player that the franchise can groom into a superstar.

This season, it looks as if Holmes can't wait until day three of the draft to act. He's going to have to begin considering edge as soon as the second-round, assuming the Lions decide to get a jump on tackle early on. Fortunately, there are players such as Zion Young and Malachi Lawrence who could linger early into day two that would provide excellent value.
It's time for the Lions to add a young defensive end to the roster to help rush the passer, and there may be no better time than the present
