Can Meeks crack the rotation sooner rather than later?

One of the biggest bright spots from the Detroit Lions' preseason slate was the performance of rookie wide receiver Jackson Meeks. The undrafted wide receiver, who played college football for Georgia for three seasons and with Syracuse for one, has a bright future in the NFL.

This preseason with the Lions, Meeks was one of the most impressive players, recording 11 receptions for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Despite his impactful performance in the preseason, Meeks was just short of making the Lions' final 53-man roster for the 2025 season, but still has a spot on Detroit's practice squad.

Meeks is still a player that the Lions are hoping will continue to develop on the practice squad and could very well eventually find his way moving up the depth chart.

Lions wide receivers coach speaks on what Meeks can improve on moving forward

Lions wide receivers coach Scott Montgomery has spoken very highly of Meeks and recently gave his thoughts on what the young wideout needs to do to improve and land a spot on the 53-man roster.

"Man, I think he's deserving. Right, like in this league, I think he's a player that can play and play at a high level. You know, where we are as a program a great determining factor for some of that. We have gotten to a point with Dan (Campbell) and Brad (Holmes) to where I think we've done just about as best of a job I've been around of creating that echelon. Where it is so heavy at the top, that the top and the middle are now close to. So, breaking into that for anybody can be tough."

With Meeks, Dominic Lovett, and Isaac TeSlaa still in tow for the Lions, Montgomery has a ton of work to do - in the best way possible - to develop this new and exciting core of playmakers in Detroit.

As the wide receivers coach for the Lions, Montgomery has a proven track record of helping to develop multiple first-round wideouts and spent time coaching running backs. He believes that the future is bright for Meeks as a Detroit Lion.

"But what I'll say to him, though, is that, his time is coming. You've got to be ready when your time comes. And it is coming. I feel it. I think that there's no holding him out of becoming a great player in this league. Just be ready," said Montgomery.
