The Detroit Lions figure to get a contract extension done with Jahmyr Gibbs in the near future. After locking up a key player in Jack Campbell on a four-year deal, it's clear that the front office wants to continue rewarding their own players.
The only downside to this is that no NFL team is able to pay everyone, so there could be a tough decision coming in the future, as there are a ton of other notable players on this roster already under big-time contracts. General Manager Brad Holmes is in a great situation overall given how good this roster is, but the financials may not work out for a certain player or two.
Well, Gibbs, the nucleus of the offense, figures to be the 'next up' for a contract. According to spotrac.com, his market value comes in at a three-year deal worth $60,484,512, which is just over $20 million per year. While that may seem like a ton, when compared across the league, it would end up being a total steal for the Lions.
Detroit Lions could be getting a deal with a Jahmyr Gibbs' contract extension
As of now, according to Over The Cap, there are 23 running backs and wide receivers in the NFL who make at least $20 million per year, and their 2025 production all lends itself to the idea that a Gibbs' extension around this mark would be a massive steal. In the 2025 NFL Season, Gibbs finished with 1,839 yards and 18 touchdowns. In the table above, he's got better production than every single player.
Sure, this exercise isn't perfect, as there are some players on this list who played single-digit games, but that's also kind of the point here. Not only does Gibbs produce at a high level - a 17-game average of 1,745 yards and 17 touchdowns, but he also stays on the field, having missed just two regular-season games through three seasons.
Not only that, but he's still young. Gibbs is only set to play in his age-24 season, as he hit 24 years old back in March. Through three years in the league, he's amassed 5,029 scrimmage yards and 49 touchdowns.

There is only one running back in the NFL who is at that $20 million per year mark, and it's Saquon Barkley, but this is how things go in the NFL. With the salary cap typically always rising rather rapidly, contracts get bigger and bigger.
The $20 million per year mark for a running back of Gibbs' caliber would not only be a large payday, but it would fall right in line with where the market is headed, but it would also reflect a wise use of dollars.
Without Gibbs on this offense, the entire unit would look a lot different. He's one of the more dynamic players in the NFL on either side of the ball and is only just now entering his mid-20s. If Detroit is able to get Gibbs on an extension for around $20 million per year, it would mark yet another wise move made by this elite front office.
