Lions have somehow surfaced as a possible suitor for Rams WR Cooper Kupp
Most, if not all, of the trade chatter around the Detroit Lions right now is focused on the possible pursuit of an edge rusher with Aidan Hutchinson added to Marcus Davenport on IR with what are likely season-ending injuries. And rightly so, with that as the clear No. 1 need on a team with a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl this year.
In an apparent concession that this season will not be a good one for them, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Rams are open to trading wide receiver Cooper Kupp. Russini further reported they want a second-round pick, and are willing to take on some of Kupp's 2024 salary to facilitate a deal.
Out of left field on Tuesday, after Russini's reporting, Gilbert Manzano of SI.com put the Lions on his list of teams who should go all-in to trade for Kupp.
"If the Rams are no longer prioritizing a postseason push, that could increase the odds of Snead trading Kupp to a fellow NFC team. Snead is familiar with Lions GM Brad Holmes—the two worked together for many years in Los Angeles and St. Louis. The two GMs also worked out the blockbuster 2021 trade that sent Stafford to the Rams and Jared Goff to the Lions."
"Given how that trade worked well for both sides, perhaps these two teams should do business again. Kupp is already familiar with Goff and he would aid the Lions’ dominant offense in various ways. Detroit would be a bigger headache to defend against the run, with how well Kupp thrives in doing the dirty work. And receiver depth wouldn’t hurt after Jameson Williams was recently suspended for two games. Not many will care about the second-round pick in Detroit if this season ends with the Lombardi trophy."
The tie Lions' general manager Brad Holmes has to the Rams should not be discounted, and Jameson Williams' reported two-game suspension (which is still pending an announcement by the league/an appeal) is a notable layer to the conversation.
But even if Williams ends up suspended for two games, it's only two games and hardly a reason to make a bold trade for a wide receiver.
Idea of Lions trading for Cooper Kupp defies all logic
While it feels like a stretch that Kupp would be anywhere near the Lions' trade radar, some people might buy into the possibility-or want people to buy into the possibility.
As shared by The 33rd Team, one sportsbook has given the Lions the fourth-best odds to acquire Kupp if he is traded.
Via written words or posted betting odds, there's no viable logic behind the idea of the Lions trading for Kupp. Circumstances can change, but Kupp's name being in headlines is not nearly enough to make it make sense.
