Lions' free agency moves could make a lot of sense if latest rumor is true

Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell might not be seeing eye to eye.

Could there be some internal disagreement in how the Detroit Lions are approaching their roster construction this offseason?

According to 97.1 FM's Mike Valenti, that seems to be the case.

Valenti, who co-hosts 97.1 FM's The Ticket, was answering a question from a listener on air on Thursday about the Lions' approach to free agency. The listener was wondering aloud what Dan Campbell might be thinking about his new-look roster, which includes some big additions on the offensive line, but mostly smaller moves on the margins.

Valenti then speculated that Campbell and Brad Holmes are not agreeing with how to move forward with their roster in 2026 and beyond.

"Well, I'll answer your question this way. And I'm not being coy, but I'm also not in the business of burning people. Someone who covers the team told me that this was the first offseason there are definite differences of opinions in roster construction between Dan and Brad."

Lions could be facing some internal conflict amid free agency

Detroit has had a very cheap free agency, doling out the most money for their next presumptive center, Cade Mays. Aside from him, it's been a ton of smaller, one-year deals to fill gaps in their secondary, on their offensive line, and somewhat in their defensive trenches.

What's most interesting about this rumor, though, is that either Holmes or Campbell could be looking to get more aggressive. They're similar in their fiery approach to...basically everything related to the Lions, so it's hard to believe that they wouldn't be aligned in aggressiveness this offseason.

But, looking back on some of their comments from earlier this offseason, you can get a feel of how Holmes and Campbell were both looking to approach this roster - with a light touch.

"More activity is not going to be an answer. A lot of the changes and tweaks and adjustments that we will make probably won't make a headline. I don't think it's indicative of a lack of effort, work ethic," said Holmes at his end of year press conference following a fourth-place finish in the NFC North.

And this was straight from Campbell during the NFL Scouting Combine regarding free agency:

"When you say make a splash, you mean name recognition, right? If it’s worthy of that on tape, then absolutely. But if you do that, you’re on of everything. The competition, the depth, that would suffer. That's the juggling act that Brad and I constantly go through. What should we do, what can we do? All of those conversations we've had. We continue to have. They’re all good."

Neither seemed ready to go all-in on one or two players, which is what makes this speculation really confusing. Of course, Valenti can't reveal, or doesn't want to reveal, his source. But, looking back on what we have on paper, it's hard to imagine a world where they're not aligned with the approach they've had so far this offseason.

If there is any disagreement, maybe it's from misses on the trade market, or even some regret over losing out on other key free agents earlier in the process that Detroit didn't even make a major push for. But, as it stands, it's hard to see where there was a disconnect looking back on their quotes leading up to the first and current second wave of free agency.
