The Detroit Lions have officially closed the loop on the David Montgomery trade thanks to their moves on Day 2 of the NFL draft.
General manager Brad Holmes shipped off their 128th overall pick, as well as their 50th overall pick, to the New York Jets in exchange for Aaron Glenn's 44th overall pick. With that selection, the Lions landed much-needed pass rusher help in Derrick Moore. The Michigan product lands back in the same state where he flourished in college.
The 128th overall pick that the Lions sent out to the Jets for the right to take Moore ended up getting traded a third time, sent out to the Cincinnati Bengals by the Jets. That pick, in turn, became Connor Lew for the AFC North team.

This simple trade, which didn't net the Lions any starters initially, ended up being a bit of a whirlwind because of how valuable the 128th overall selection ended up being to both New York and Cincinnati. For that one pick to turn into a package for Moore, which in turn became a package for yet another quarterback for the Jets, is quite a feat.
Detroit's running back room, addressed in free agency via the signing of Isiah Pacheco, will still likely miss Montgomery's leadership and grittiness. But, the Lions did right by Montgomery by sending him to the team he preferred, and Houston returned the favor by inadvertently helping the Lions achieve one of their larger draft goals: finding an edge rusher.
