The Detroit Lions defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 37-24 on Sunday to improve to 4-1 for the third consecutive season. Lions running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs tied NFL history in the win for Detroit.
Since joining forces in 2023, the Lions running back duo of Montgomery and Gibbs has arguably been the best in the NFL over the last two seasons. In Sunday's win against the Bengals, they tied an NFL record for a running back duo to score in the same game. Montgomery and Gibbs have scored a touchdown in a game for the Lions 14 times.
The duo's record ties former Dallas Cowboys running backs Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston. Smith and Johnston were a dominant running back duo for the Dallas Cowboys dynasty teams of the 1990s.

The Lions recorded 118 total rushing yards in Sunday's win against the Bengals. It was a special homecoming for the Cincinnati native, David Montgomery, who led the Lions in rushing with 18 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Gibbs finished the game with 12 carries for 54 yards. His touchdown came on the receiving end in the third quarter, which included two receptions for 93 yards.
Montgomery also threw a touchdown pass to Lions tight end Brock Wright in the second quarter. Montgomery was back playing in his hometown for the first time in his seven-year NFL career.

Many of Montgomery's family members were in attendance for Montgomery's homecoming game, including his sister, who saw him play in his first NFL game in person since being in a horrible car accident in February of 2024.

With the NFL record now tied, there is no doubt that Montgomery and Gibbs will break the record for a running back duo to record a touchdown in the same game at some point this season.
The record breaker could very well happen for Gibbs and Montgomery next Sunday night, when the Lions take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Gibbs and Montgomery have scored in the same game twice this season for the Lions in the matchups against the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens.
