Joel Bitonio, a seven time Pro Bowler and five time All-Pro guard, has officially announced his retirement from the NFL. The Cleveland Browns' long-time guard will be leaving behind a legacy of a lineman who was far too underrated all due to the teams' lack of success during his tenure.
Bitonio, who had been a free agent prior to this announcement, could've been a viable option for the Lions if they were not liking what they saw from Christian Mahogany in camp or preseason. The veteran posted a 75.7 pass blocking grade last season, and a grade of 70.7 overall, despite his age and the Browns' mediocre play.
Detroit could still pivot to other available guards on the market for additional depth behind Mahogany, but now, it sure does feel like they'll be banking on the likes of Ben Bartch and Miles Frazier to provide meaningful backup snaps, rather than investing in any other linemen in free agency.
Bitonio, potential Lions target in free agency, retires
It was only April when Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport named Bitonio as a potential match for the Lions in free agency, writing that, "he'd be a steady veteran addition who would likely welcome the chance to play for a contender again."
It's true that it would've been cool to see Bitonio get the chance to actually contend, and likely start for that contender, had he signed with the Lions. Mahogany could very well prove that he's ready to fully take the reins at left guard this offseason, but Detroit needs a higher ceiling than, "he may improve on his shortened 2025 season, or he may not."

It would've been nice to have another veteran on the line, as well, since Detroit's trenches are suddenly looking quite baby faced. Cade Mays, who signed with Detroit in free agency as their Graham Glasgow replacement at center, is only 27 years old. Tate Ratledge is only headed into his second year. And, Blake Miller is likely going to be starting at right tackle in his rookie year.
The Lions could still snag another veteran guard on the market, like former Lion Kevin Zeitler. Zeitler had a solid year with the Tennessee Titans in 2025, but with him still not having signed anywhere, it's fair to wonder if he's taking the time necessary to figure out if he'd like to go the Bitonio route.
Detroit is banking on some major leaps from their young line, and some incredible leadership from Penei Sewell. But, it would be nice to see them hone in on some veteran help if players like Bartch or Frazier aren't up to snuff.
