Jared Goff's immunity to pocket pressure this season has Lions' offense soaring

The Detroit Lions have been impressive on offense thus far in 2026, and the biggest reason for their success is likely to incite a massive debate within the fanbase.

This season, Detroit's offensive line has been much improved. That has allowed Jahmyr Gibbs to look like arguably the best offensive player in the entire NFL, and has also allowed receivers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and even Isaac TeSlaa to have big moments.

Overlooked as a reason for the success always seems to be quarterback Jared Goff. So far, Goff has enjoyed a flawless start to the season, and has been efficient in the pocket, allowing everything to happen in front of him.

Arguably one of the biggest reasons for his success is due to his unflappability in the pocket. Detroit's line has been good, but when things have broken down, Goff has remained fantastic. As Pro Football Focus noted, he currently has the second-highest passing grade in the league when facing pressure only trailing Patrick Mahomes.

This stat is particularly interesting because Goff gets the reputation around the league as a statue in the pocket. Most don't think of him as someone mobile enough or savvy enough to make big plays under pressure. In the past he has struggled with heat up front, but this season, he seems to have added this new element to his game.

If Goff can continue to make smart decisions and be slightly elusive when pressure does come, the Lions might be the best offense in the league. Their weaponry top to bottom is second to none, and Goff's pocket presence has been seen as one of the few weak links the offense does possess. That might not be the case anymore.

Goff believes he's playing very efficient to start the 2026 season

Any quarterback is a perfectionist when it comes to their craft, and Goff is no exepction. Even though he's been one of the league's best to start the season, there's likely still small things he can nitpick on tape.

Still, Goff likes what he's been able to do when it comes to decision making and smarts. He hasn't uncorked the deep ball a lot, but the entire offense is operating efficiently thanks to his ability to find quality check downs and take what the defense gives him.

"Yeah, (I've been) good. I think I've done a good job of being disciplined and not getting frustrated with the lack of deep throws. And it's not that we're not calling them, it's just that they're playing with so much depth. It's my job to not get frustrated and stay within myself and take the check downs. I have, and it's been good."

It's taken a while to get Jameson Williams and TeSlaa going, but it feels like a matter of time before the Lions are able to unlock the big play element down the field that both possess. Sam LaPorta also hasn't had any of his patented huge games underneath, so there is opportunity for major growth ahead on multiple fronts.

Goff is off to a blazing start for many reasons this year, and the way he steps up in the pocket under duress has been a quiet reason the Lions have been elite on offense to start 2026.
