Jared Goff is thankful Dan Campbell stuck with him through early struggles
For the last two-plus seasons, Jared Goff has been one of the most effective and efficient quarterbacks in the NFL. In line with that, the Detroit Lions are 30-8 since starting the 2022 season 1-6.
Around the time of that 1-6 start to the 2022 campaign, there were legit questions if things would ever work under head coach Dan Campbell. After that game, Campbell remained steadfast that the Lions were on the right track.
Alongside questions about whether Campbell's tenure would become fruitful were questions about Jared Goff. Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes never wavered in their support of the quarterback, and that faith has been proven correct now.

Jared Goff is thankful for the faith Dan Campbell showed in him
Michael Silver of The Athletic is out with a deep dive into Goff and his career resurgence. The piece starts with Goff being called into Campbell's office after a 24-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboy in Week 7 of the 2022 season, when Goff accounted for four turnovers. That meeting was a turning point, and an epiphany of sorts for Goff.
As Goff finished reflecting on his journey with Silver, from being discarded by the Rams and Sean McVay to the point he and the team is at now, the Lions' signal caller expressed appreciation for the faith Campbell showed in him.
"I think there were moments where Dan could have turned his back on me,” Goff said. “He was the head coach on a team that was 0-10-1, and then at the end of the season we were 3-13-1. Could’ve done it then; could’ve done it in the middle of that first season; could’ve done it the next year when we were 1-6 to start. And he never did. And I’m thankful for that."
"Cause you see it all over the league, where somebody’s head’s got to fall:, Goff said. They were calling for his head. They were calling for Brad’s head. They were calling for my head. And Dan just held the line and said, ‘No, I believe in what we’re doing here, I believe in Jared, I believe in what we have going on, and he’s our guy.’ And here we are.”
Amid those early struggles, a different Lions' head coach might have benched Goff in favor of the less-than inspiring backup options that were in place then. But Campbell, as he has always done, stuck it out and stuck by Goff with confidence better days would come. The better days did come, starting soon after that pivotal late-October 2022 meeting in Campbell's office, all to the way the Lions being the current betting favorite to win the Super Bowl.
