Jared Goff is one more excellent game away from making history
Somehow, despite going a perfect 18-for 18 through the air, thanks to not quite reaching all four criteria required to do so, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff did not quite register a perfect 158.3 passer rating Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks (155.8).
In Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys, Goff went 18-for-25 for 315 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions while posting a 153.7 passer rating. He fell just shy of the completion percentage threshold (77.25 percent) to get a perfect passer rating in that game
Counting Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals, Goff has a 146.6 passer rating over his last three games. According to Lions' PR, he is the only quarterback since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger to have a completion percentage of 80-plus percent and a passer rating of 140.0-plus over any three-game span (minimum 50 attempts).
Jared Goff needs one more great game to make history
Back-to-back games with a passer rating over 150 is obviously a rare feat. How rare? Let's consult Lions' PR from after the game against the Cowboys.
Three quarterbacks in NFL history have had three straight games with a passer rating of 140 or better: Roger Staubach in 1971, Kurt Warner in 1999 and Aaron Rodgers in 2011. Goff can become the first to have three straight games with a passer rating of 150 or better if he does it Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
It won't be an easy task. Despite allowing the third-most passing yards per game (263.0), the Vikings enter Week 7 with the lowest passer rating allowed in the league (70.3). Defensive coordinator Brian Flores makes life difficult for opposing quarterbacks with his blitz looks (who's coming? who's not?). But Goff has been successful against the blitz in his career and so far this season (notably different than actual pressure), so maybe he has another excellent outing and makes some history on Sunday that will be hard for anyone to match.
